Black Sherif Features in 2024 BECE

Ghanaian sensation Black Sherif has made waves by being featured in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for the Creative Arts and Design subject. This is a testament to his immense influence on the Ghanaian music scene and culture. Question 5(c) of Section B asked students to delve into the lives of one of three iconic composers, including the man himself, Black Sherif. They were to explore his origins, musical genre, notable works, and societal contributions.

Born Mohammed Ismail Sherif in the vibrant town of Konongo-Zongo in the Ashanti Region, Black Sherif’s journey to stardom is nothing short of inspiring. He first caught the public eye with his 2021 hits ‘First Sermon’ and ‘Second Sermon.’ But it was ‘Kwaku the Traveller’ released in March 2022 that catapulted him to the top of the charts in Ghana and Nigeria, cementing his status as a musical powerhouse. His eagerly anticipated debut album dropped on October 5, 2022, to much acclaim.

Sherif’s educational path saw him through Konongo Zongo Islamic Basic School and Pinamang Educational Complex for his basic education, and later to Kumasi Academy for his secondary education. It was at Kumasi Academy, within the Literary Group of the Students Representative Council, that Sherif discovered his passion for music and dance.

His discography, rich with hits like ‘Kilos Milos,’ ‘Yaya,’ ‘Shut Up,’ and ‘Soja,’ showcases his versatility and creativity, captivating audiences far and wide.

The Creative Arts and Design subject, newly introduced at the Common Core Programme level, is a multidisciplinary field encompassing design, visual arts, music, dance, and drama. It aims to foster self-exploration, self-expression, mental focus, physical dexterity, stress management, and personal fulfillment among students.

The 2024 BECE, which kicked off on July 8, will run until July 15, 2024, with Black Sherif’s inclusion in the exam highlighting his significant impact on the cultural and educational landscape of Ghana.
