Two Chief Executives of the Bono Region Executives Narrowly Escape Death During a Robbery Attack
In a dramatic turn of events, two chief executives in the Bono Region narrowly escaped death during a brazen robbery attack on the Fetentaa section of the Berekum-Drobo highway. The Ghana News Agency (GNA) reported that Mr. Andrews Bediako, the Jaman South Municipal Chief Executive, and Mr. Solomon Owusu, the Jaman North District Chief Executive, were ambushed by armed robbers while returning from a meeting in Sunyani.
Mr. Bediako recounted the harrowing incident, which occurred on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM. According to him, the robbers, fully armed and numbering about five, had targeted market women and traders traveling from Drobo and Sampa to Berekum and Sunyani. The robbers emerged suddenly from the roadside near the Fetentaa Refugee camp in the Berekum West District, firing gunshots sporadically and signaling vehicles to stop.
“They just appeared from the shoulder of the stretch, fired gunshots sporadically, and signaled us to stop. They even hit and broke my windscreen with lumber; however, we managed to speed off from the terrible scene,” Mr. Bediako narrated.
In a tense moment, the engine of Mr. Owusu’s vehicle broke down, adding to the danger of the situation. Despite this, both executives managed to escape the chaotic scene unhurt. They quickly alerted the police and warned other vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, prompting the robbers to flee into the bush.
However, the robbers did not leave empty-handed. They apprehended a motor rider, robbing him of his mobile phone and money and subjecting him to severe beatings before making their escape.
Mr. Bediako expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of armed robbery along the Berekum-Drobo highway. He attributed the increase in attacks to the deteriorating condition of the road and urgently called for its rehabilitation. He also appealed to the police to enhance their presence along the stretch to protect traders and other road users.
“The growing incidences of armed robbery on this portion of the road are alarming. The poor state of the road contributes to these attacks. We urgently need the road to be rehabilitated and more police patrols to ensure the safety of everyone using this route,” Mr. Bediako emphasized.
