NDC Denounces Police Brutality Against Democracy Hub Protesters

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) recently condemned the recent detainment of protesters at the Democracy Hub, who were rallying against illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey. In a statement from the party’s National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, serious concerns were raised about reports of police brutality toward innocent, unarmed individuals.

Gyamfi described troubling incidents that occurred during the demonstration, noting, “Among those detained were minors, elderly individuals, and a four-month-pregnant woman who was simply taking photos at the protest site.” Additionally, he highlighted that a man returning from church was arrested along with many other innocent bystanders.

The NDC labeled the police behavior as intolerable, insisting that peaceful protesters expressing their worries about illegal mining received inhumane treatment.

Alongside condemning the police, Gyamfi took aim at the Accra Circuit Court for remanding the activists on minor charges. He contended that the right to protest is a fundamental human right that should not be undermined by the harsh actions of law enforcement and the judiciary.

Gyamfi remarked, “We want to remind both the police and the courts that the true culprits are the negligent officials of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration and representatives of the ruling NPP, who are contaminating our water sources and environment in their reckless quest for gold.”

In a direct appeal to the President, Gyamfi said, “Citizens requesting an end to the galamsey crisis, a matter you pledged to prioritize, must not be targeted for such flagrant abuse of power by your administration.” He urged the President to direct the Attorney-General to withdraw the prosecution of the demonstrators, emphasizing the need for accountability.

The NDC’s statement highlights the persistent conflict between the government and citizens advocating for environmental safeguards in Ghana. The party’s demand for the swift release of those arrested underscores the pressing issue of human rights in the realm of civic engagement.
