“If the Government Stops Us, We Will Become R0bbers” – Pragya Drivers Lament
Tricycle riders, commonly known as Pragya riders, have issued a stark warning in response to the government’s decision to ban the use of tricycles in the capital to ease traffic congestion.
The riders have expressed deep concerns about the potential impact on their livelihoods, stating that such a ban could push many into criminal activities, including robbery.
The Importance of Pragya Riding
For many in the capital, Pragya riding has become a vital source of employment. The business not only provides a means of income but also supports families and contributes to the local economy.
One rider, speaking to GhanaWeb Business, highlighted the lack of alternative job opportunities, saying, “It will be hard because there are no jobs in the country currently”.
Economic Hardships and Rising Costs
The riders have not been immune to the harsh economic conditions affecting the country. Over the past four years, the cost of tricycles has more than doubled. A tricycle that sold for GH¢9,200 in 2020 now costs GH¢26,000.
Despite these rising costs, many riders still find the business profitable. “Sometimes, I make GH¢250, GH¢300, GH¢400 or GH¢ 500 in sales depending on the day,” one rider shared.
Potential Consequences of the Ban
The potential ban on tricycle operations has sparked fear and frustration among the riders. Another rider warned, “If they ask us to stop driving, we will steal, we will pull guns on people and rob them”.
This statement underscores the desperation felt by many who rely on this business for their survival.
Calls For Government Intervention
The riders are calling on the government to reconsider the ban and explore alternative solutions that do not jeopardize their livelihoods.
They argue that the tricycle business is not only profitable but also essential for many who have no other means of employment. The ban, they say, would be detrimental to their ability to support themselves and their families.
