Gary Neville admits he’d be willing to break his own golden rule for Pep Guardiola
Gary Neville has voiced strong criticism over the Football Association’s (FA) decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the new manager of the England national team, leading them into the 2026 World Cup. Despite some fans praising the bold move, Neville, a former England international with 85 caps, expressed deep dissatisfaction, suggesting the appointment undermines the national team’s identity.

The Sky Sports pundit has long held the belief that England’s manager should be English, promoting homegrown talent. He argued that candidates like Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United boss, or former Brighton manager Graham Potter would have been more fitting choices.
“I’ve always said that if we don’t appoint an English manager, we damage our own coaching program and brand,” Gary said on the “It’s Called Soccer!” YouTube channel. “English coaches have taken a beating for 25 to 30 years, struggling to get promoted in our own league, which has become filled with international talent.”
Guardiola: The Only Exception to the Rule
While Neville is generally against hiring foreign coaches, he admits that he would make an exception for Pep Guardiola. The Manchester United legend insists Guardiola is the only non-English manager capable of bringing the transformative impact necessary to justify such a move.
“Tuchel Appointment Doesn’t Feel Right”
Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, boasts an impressive CV. Yet, Neville feels the German lacks the same connection, influence, and lasting impact on English football as Guardiola. “Tuchel might win a tournament, and in a few years, we might thank him for his work, but it just doesn’t feel right to me,” Neville said.
Guardiola’s Legacy in England
Neville contrasted Tuchel’s hiring with Guardiola’s influence since arriving at Manchester City in 2016. “Pep’s impact on English football has been revolutionary. Six Premier League titles, including four consecutively, plus a Champions League win—he’s changed the game. That’s the kind of dramatic influence England needs.”
FA’s Decision Sparks Debate
For Neville, the FA’s choice of Tuchel falls short of what Guardiola could offer, both in terms of style and legacy. “If there’s one non-English coach I’d break my rule for, it’s Guardiola—not Tuchel,” he concluded.
