Man Utd accept defeat to Real Madrid in chase for top transfer target after scouting mission

Manchester United are targeting Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, but reports suggest they are already resigned to the likelihood of losing the transfer race to Real Madrid.

Davies, whose contract with Bayern Munich expires in June 2025, has drawn significant interest from top European clubs. The Canadian left-back has been heavily linked with Real Madrid, which has expressed a strong desire to sign him on a free transfer at the end of the season. Although Bayern previously set a transfer fee of €40 million (£34m) last summer, Real Madrid decided to wait until Davies becomes a free agent.

Manchester United, struggling with injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, have closely monitored Davies to address their left-back woes. However, United are reportedly pessimistic about their chances, as both Bayern and Real Madrid, who are currently performing at a higher level in the Champions League, present stiff competition.

Davies, who joined Bayern in 2018, has made 203 appearances and won multiple trophies, including five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League crown. Despite his success at the club, tensions have surfaced between Davies and Bayern’s management over contract negotiations. His agent, Nick Huoseh, expressed frustration earlier this year, revealing that discussions had stalled following changes in the club’s leadership.

“It’s unfair that Alphonso is now being attacked,” Huoseh told Bild. “We were close to an agreement a year ago, but after the management change, communication stopped for seven months. Now, we’re under pressure to decide in two weeks, even though we don’t know who the coach or players will be next season.”

While Davies is the primary target, The Sun reports that United are also eyeing Bayern stars Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka. Sane, whose contract expires next summer, has fallen out of favor under manager Vincent Kompany, while Goretzka has made just one appearance in six Bundesliga matches this season.
