SHS students will soon require testimonial to qualify for university – Education Minister
In a bold move to combat rising indiscipline in Ghana’s Senior High Schools (SHS), the Ministry of Education has announced a new policy requiring students to present testimonials for university admission.
This initiative, unveiled by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum at the 2024 Ghana Teacher Prize event, aims to foster a culture of discipline and accountability among students.
Dr. Adutwum emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to achieving zero tolerance for indiscipline, highlighting the alarming increase in student violence and property destruction. “The era when students go on rampages, destroying school properties, will soon be over,” he declared. The Ministry is collaborating with tertiary institutions to ensure that a testimonial becomes a key requirement for SHS graduates seeking admission to universities or training colleges.
This policy is part of a broader strategy to address the growing concern over student misconduct. Recent incidents, such as the fatal stabbing of a student at O’Reilly Senior High School, have underscored the urgent need for stricter measures.
Dr. Adutwum called on all stakeholders, including teachers and parents, to support this initiative and help instill discipline in students.
The introduction of testimonials is expected to significantly reduce instances of indiscipline, creating a safer and more conducive learning environment for both students and educators. As the Ministry rolls out this policy, it hopes to restore order and respect within Ghana’s educational institutions.
