Iranian state television reported that a helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi had a “hard landing,” with few details provided. Rescuers are currently attempting to reach the helicopter’s location following the “incident” involving the president.
Ebrahim Raisi, who took office on August 5, 2021, had a significant career in Iran’s judiciary before his presidency. He served as Chief Justice from 2019 to 2021 and is a member of the Assembly of Experts, which selects the Supreme Leader.
Known for his hardline views and alignment with conservative factions, Raisi’s presidency continues the conservative dominance in Iranian politics. The 2021 election that brought him to power saw many reformist and moderate candidates disqualified, leaving a limited field of contenders.
The president has been linked to controversial judicial rulings throughout his career. As president, he has focused on economic issues worsened by U.S. sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic, and has adopted a more confrontational stance in foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
