EC Must Give Media Unfettered Access to All Levels of Voting and Collation 0f Ballots – GJA
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfuor, has called for unrestricted access for journalists in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) recent directive limiting media access during the 2024 general elections.
This demand highlights the critical role of the media in ensuring transparency, accountability, and access to information during the electoral process.
GJA’s Stand On Media Access
During a press briefing on November 28, 2024, the President of the association emphasized that any restriction on media access on voting day would undermine the transparency and accountability of the electoral process.
He pointed out that the Electoral Commission’s directive contradicts agreements made in a recent meeting between the GJA and the electoral body.
“The EC must give unfettered access to the media to all the levels of voting and collation of ballots. The parties agreed that GJA and GIBA should present a proposal to the EC on the way forward, which we are working on now,” Mr. Dwumfuor stated.
Concerns Over Media Restrictions
The Electoral Commission’s memo dated November 25, 2024, indicated that only eight media organizations would be accredited to cover collation activities in the constituencies.
Mr. Dwumfuor up argued that such restrictions would not serve the best interests of transparency, accountability, and access to information, which are essential for credible elections.
He further stressed that restricted media houses might rely on unverified sources of information, potentially compromising the integrity of the elections.
“In essence, restricting access to the media will hurt, rather than help, the quest for credible media reportage of the elections and the eventual outcome of same,” he added.
Call for Improved Mechanisms
The President of the GJA urged the EC to provide and improve mechanisms to facilitate the work of the media at all levels of voting and collation of ballots.
He expressed gratitude for the collaboration experienced so far and highlighted the importance of equipping journalists with the necessary skills for credible election reporting.
“In its latest press statement, the EC indicated that it is a listening body; we believe it will also hear us. We hasten to add that we have had very cordial relations with the EC.
Just this past Tuesday and Wednesday, the GJA, with the kind support of the EC, organized two zonal training workshops for 80 journalists across the country with the view to equipping them with the requisite skills to ensure credible election reporting. The skills they have acquired to work for the good of Mother Ghana should not be restricted,” Mr. Dwumfuor advised.
Looking Ahead
As the December 7 elections approach, the GJA’s call for unfettered media access highlights the ongoing dialogue between the media and the EC.
Ensuring that journalists can cover all aspects of the electoral process without hindrance is crucial for maintaining the integrity and credibility of the elections.
