Urgent: 2 in Critical Condition as Immigration Officers Clash with Shia Residents
At least two individuals are in critical condition following a violent clash between residents of Shia, a border community in the Ho Municipality, and officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
The incident, which occurred on November 15, 2024, has heightened tensions in the area.
Origins of the Conflict
According to youth leader Ekro Yao, the unrest began on November 14 when an immigration officer had a disagreement with some okada (commercial motorcycle) riders in the area.
The situation escalated into chaos on Friday, November 15, resulting in two residents sustaining severe injuries.
Immediate Medical Response
The injured individuals were rushed to a local health center, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. Their condition remains critical.
Eyewitness Accounts
An eyewitness, Kuzor Jonas, told Myjoyonline.com that armed Immigration officers stormed the community at around 4:00 PM on Friday.
In response, aggrieved residents blocked roads leading to the Immigration Service office and set lorry tyres on fire, further escalating the situation
Shia, a border community in the Ho Municipality, has been thrown into turmoil by this incident. The clash is suspected to be linked to ongoing tensions and disputes in the area, which have now reached a boiling point.
Traditional Rulers Step In
In an effort to resolve the conflict, traditional rulers, led by Togbe Dadzawa III, the paramount chief of the Shia traditional area, have stepped in to mediate between the GIS officers and the residents.
The mediation is scheduled to take place on November 19 at the chief’s palace, with the Volta Regional Command of the GIS and youth leaders expected to attend.
Community Concerns
The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Divine Bosson, who is also an indigene of the community, described the conduct of the GIS officers as “unprofessional” and pledged to work with the GIS Command to ensure peace prevails.
Residents have expressed concerns that without swift intervention, the disturbances could escalate further.
Background of the Tension
This incident is not the first of its kind in Shia. Earlier this year, a 25-year-old okada rider was shot and killed by a GIS officer in the community.
The recent clash has reignited fears and frustrations among residents, who are calling for better handling of such situations by law enforcement.
