If we are not careful, the EC will lead us to destruction- Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe
A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has issued a stern warning regarding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of the upcoming elections. He expressed concerns that the EC’s failure to address the demands and concerns of political parties could lead the country into disaster if proper measures are not taken.
Concerns Over EC’s Competence
In a recent interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on September 19, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe criticized the EC’s actions, stating, “If this nation is not careful, the EC will lead us to destruction. The sort of pronouncements they come up with make us question if they are even qualified to be in that position.” He also highlighted past instances where voters were unknowingly transferred to different locations, indicating systemic failures that could impact electoral credibility.
NDC’s Nationwide Protest Against the EC
These remarks come in the wake of a nationwide demonstration held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on September 17, 2024, protesting the EC’s refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter’s register. The NDC has alleged numerous irregularities, including illegal mass transfers of voters, and insists that an audit is necessary to ensure a fair electoral process.
EC’s Response Sparks Further Concerns
Despite these concerns, the EC’s Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Samuel Tettey, condemned the NDC’s protests, arguing that demonstrations will not result in a credible voter’s register. Tettey’s stance has drawn criticism from Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, who stressed that it is the responsibility of the EC to address these concerns to maintain trust in the electoral process. “Where we are going to now, for Tettey to come and say they are not going to listen to demands that have been brought by the NDC is a serious matter,” he emphasized.
