‘Galamsey’ Saga: Asantehene Osei Tutu II Destools 3 Chiefs Over Involvement In Illegal Mining
In a bold move against illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has destooled three prominent chiefs: the Sabronum Gyaasehene, the Akyeamhene, and the Baamuhene. This decision, announced on August 26, 2024, during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace, reflects the Asantehene’s strong commitment to environmental conservation and the proper conduct of traditional leaders.
The action followed an investigation revealing the chiefs’ failure to address, and alleged complicity in, illegal mining activities within their jurisdictions. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed his disappointment that these leaders had compromised their responsibilities, contributing to environmental damage and the degradation of local resources. The destoolment emphasizes that traditional leaders must serve as stewards of the land and uphold community welfare.
Galamsey, which involves illicit small-scale mining, has been a persistent issue in Ghana, causing significant environmental harm, including the pollution of water bodies and loss of arable land. Despite various governmental efforts to combat this issue, the practice has persisted, often implicating influential figures in society.
