Dramatic Rescue: Young Woman Saved from Kwame Nkrumah Interchange Flyover
In a dramatic turn of events on July 25, personnel from the Ghana Fire Service heroically rescued a young woman named Alima, who was discovered precariously seated between the piers and deck of the flyover in front of the bustling Odawna market at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange. This rescue operation unfolded amidst growing concern from onlookers and speculations about her intentions.
Eyewitnesses shared their bewilderment, with some speculating that Alima had intended to jump from the flyover. One witness recounted, “She wanted to jump from the top, and people begged her not to until the fire service personnel came to her rescue.”
Another bystander added, “We saw a crowd gathering and rushed to see what was happening. There she was, between the pillars of the overhead. Some people even thought she might be a witch. We didn’t know what to do, so we called the police, and when they couldn’t help, we called the fire service.”
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One of the Ghana National Fire Service, Daniel Appiah, described the rescue operation: “We were on duty when two civilians reported a young woman stuck at the overpass. We quickly moved our fire engine to the scene and, with the help of a civilian who knew a way through, we managed to rescue her. After the rescue, we handed her over to the National Ambulance, who checked her vitals and transported her to the hospital.”
Interestingly, items such as books, pen drives, and mobile phone cases were found at the site, hinting that Alima might not have been alone there.
Portia Ofori, an Advanced CMT at the Circle Ambulance Station, provided further insights after speaking with Alima. “Initially, she wasn’t able to talk and didn’t respond to questions in Twi. We took her to Ridge Hospital, where I realized she was hungry. I promised her food if she answered a few questions. She revealed that a man had sent her there and that they had been living together. She confirmed that the man had been sleeping with her. After giving her some food, she said she wasn’t sick. We then brought her back to our base, gave her some money, and asked her to leave.”
