17-Year-Old Girl Shot Dead At Kunsu Mining Site
A tragic incident unfolded at a galamsey site in Nyame Adom-Kunsu, located in the Ahafo-Ano South District of the Ashanti region, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old girl and injuries to seven others.
The young girl, identified as Clementina Danso, succumbed to her injuries shortly after being rushed to the Mankranso Government Hospital.
Details of the Incident
The violence erupted on Friday, October 18, 2024, around 11:00 am, when a security officer at the mining site, operated by Chinese nationals, opened fire on locals.
The assembly member for Kunsu Nyame Adom, Felix Nkansah, confirmed that the shooting occurred when town residents went to the site to collect residual materials, a practice that had been previously accepted by the site operators.
Nkansah explained that eight people were shot, with Clementina Danso tragically losing her life shortly after arriving at the hospital. The other victims are currently receiving treatment, with two of them being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further care.
Community Reaction and Official Response
The incident has sparked outrage and grief within the community. Assembly member Felix Nkansah reported the shooting to the police, but the shooter has since gone into hiding.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South-West, Joseph Bonsu Frimpong, confirmed the incident and stated that the injured individuals are being treated for their wounds, with some requiring the removal of pellets.
Ongoing Investigation
Local authorities are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made so far. The community is calling for justice and increased security measures to prevent such tragedies.
