SHS Students stone policeman at an interschool soccer game in Kumasi
During the three-day 2024 Senior High School (SHS) Girls Soccer Final held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, police officers providing security faced an unexpected and violent situation. According to a police report, a fierce fight broke out between students from Armed Forces SHS and Islamic SHS, prompting a swift intervention by the police to restore order.
At 8 am on June 11, 2024, while the officers were attempting to separate the feuding students, the situation took a dangerous turn. The students began throwing stones at the police, resulting in head injuries to G/Const. Boakye Bismark of the SWAT Unit in the Ashanti Region. The injured officer was quickly transported to a hospital in Asokwa after receiving initial treatment at a stadium ambulance station. He was treated for his head injuries and discharged the same day.
The Asokwa District Police report provided further details about the incident, explaining that the violence erupted during a match organized by the Schools and Colleges Federation-Ashanti. The altercation between the students of Armed Forces SHS and Islamic SHS escalated, necessitating police intervention. Despite the officers’ efforts to calm the situation, the students’ aggression led to stone-throwing, injuring G/Const. Boakye Bismark.
The police report also indicated that several suspects involved in the stone-throwing have been identified and will be apprehended to assist with the investigation. The police are committed to ensuring that those responsible for the violence are held accountable. The report emphasized that the police had risked their lives to restore peace at the stadium and expressed concern over the students’ hostile reaction to their presence.
