Over 500 Students And Teachers Locked Out Of Classrooms By Contractor Over Unsettled Payments

Galilea, Accra – November 22, 2024

Over 500 students and teachers of the Galilea MA1&2 Kindergarten and Primary School have been left stranded after the contractor locked the classroom block in protest over unpaid debts by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

The incident, which occurred early Friday morning, has disrupted academic activities and left the affected students sitting outside the school premises. Teachers, parents, and students have expressed frustration over the abrupt closure, which underscores ongoing challenges with funding and infrastructure development in public schools across the country.

Background of the Issue

The contractor responsible for constructing the school building reportedly took the drastic step after multiple attempts to recover payment for work completed under GETFund yielded no results. Sources close to the contractor revealed that the government institution has delayed payments for months, leaving the contractor unable to cover operational costs and maintain services.

GETFund, established in 2000, is mandated to provide supplementary funding to support the development of educational infrastructure. However, delayed disbursements have increasingly become a point of contention, affecting projects across Ghana.

Impact on Students and Teachers

The sudden closure has thrown the school’s academic calendar into disarray. Teachers, unable to access their classrooms and teaching materials, are concerned about the setback to students’ learning progress.

“We are helpless in this situation. It is heartbreaking to see the children sitting on the ground with no place to study,” lamented one of the teachers. “Education is being sacrificed due to financial disputes that should not involve the students.”

Parents, too, are outraged. “Why should innocent children suffer because of this? The government must intervene immediately to resolve this issue,” a concerned parent stated.

Calls for Urgent Intervention

This situation has sparked public outcry, with various stakeholders urging the government to prioritize the release of funds to contractors. Educational advocacy groups have also called on GETFund to improve its financial management to avoid such occurrences in the future.

The Member of Parliament for the area, as well as the Municipal Education Directorate, have been petitioned to step in and mediate a resolution. “We cannot afford to compromise the future of these children,” a local assembly member stressed.

Broader Implications

This is not the first time financial disputes have disrupted educational infrastructure in Ghana. Several schools have been left in limbo due to halted projects and contractors locking facilities. Education experts warn that the persistent delays in GETFund payments risk derailing efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims for inclusive and equitable quality education.

Government’s Response

At the time of reporting, officials from GETFund had yet to comment on the issue. However, the Ministry of Education has assured the public that steps are being taken to address contractor payments nationwide.
