Election Fever Hits UGACC: Who Will Lead the Charge in 2024?

As the University of Ghana Accra City Campus (UGACC) gears up for its Junior Common Room (JCR) elections on Wednesday, 24th July 2024, students are evaluating the various candidates vying for leadership positions. This year’s elections promise to be highly competitive, with multiple teams presenting comprehensive policies to address the needs and aspirations of the student body.

Standing high in their PR system is Michael Mintah and Bobby Jerry (#TeamMight) have put forward a platform aimed at fostering growth, progress, and service to the campus community. Michael Mintah, currently serving as Treasurer of the Business House Junior Common Room (BHJCR) and President of Inquisitive To Study, has extensive experience in financial management and campus development. Bobby Jerry brings a diverse background in student leadership, with roles ranging from Course Representative to BHJCR Electoral Commission member.

#TeamMight’s policy agenda covers key areas such as security, health, entertainment, sanitation, accommodation, and entrepreneurship. They propose the installation of CCTV cameras and enhanced security personnel shifts to ensure student safety, advocacy for penalty-free medical screenings, and the provision of first aid boxes at lecture blocks. Their plans also include inter-departmental debates and quizzes, support for sports activities through the provision of kits and equipment, and initiatives to maintain clean and well-equipped washrooms.

In terms of accommodation, #TeamMight aims to secure permanent quotas in Diaspora Halls for City Campus students and regulate shuttle prices to make transportation more affordable. They also focus on supporting student entrepreneurs through mentorship and resource provision, organizing an entrepreneurship fair with tangible rewards, and collaborating on driving skills and license acquisition.

Another  fierce competition, Gideon Ampoh and Emmanuel Kotey (#WeAreInvictus)  offer a robust platform focusing on improving student accommodation, sanitation, academics, and security. Their policies include increasing the availability of hostels, improving the quality and affordability of residences, and ensuring safety through regular inspections. They emphasize the development of a detailed maintenance schedule for sanitation facilities, regular inspection and repair, and the integration of sustainable practices.

A look at the presidential candidates

On the academic front, #WeAreInvictus proposes the creation of a central information platform, support for students retaking courses, organizing exam tutorials, and advocating for a 24-hour study room on campus. Their security policies aim to improve lighting, surveillance, and emergency call boxes, partner with local law enforcement, and regularly upgrade security measures while employing qualified personnel.

The other presidential candidates include Amui Dorcas(president)with Adumata Richmond Owusu(vice), and Sorogoh Mohammed Abdul-Rauf (president)with Gabriel Kofi(vice). Each pair brings unique visions and policies to the table, contributing to a highly competitive race.

As election day approaches, UGACC students are encouraged to review the detailed and ambitious plans of all candidates. Each team brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to addressing the needs of the student body. This election represents an important opportunity for students to shape the future of their campus by choosing leaders who will drive positive change and enhance the overall student experience.
