Building under construction collapses on carpenter in Ashaiman

A tragic incident occurred in Ashaiman Community 22, where an uncompleted building collapsed, resulting in the death of a carpenter and injuries to four others. The collapse took place on Saturday, June 15, 2024, and claimed the life of 46-year-old Kwesi Yobo Dankwa. Dankwa, who was not the regular carpenter for the project, had been called in to work for the first time because the usual carpenter was absent that day. While removing the wooden supports used to cast a beam, the structure gave way, causing the beam to fall and fatally crush Dankwa.

The remaining workers were trapped under the debris until local residents, police, Ghana National Fire Service personnel, and officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) managed to rescue them. The injured individuals were promptly taken to Tema General Hospital for medical treatment.
Kudovor Kenneth, the Assemblymember for the area, disclosed that the construction was being carried out without the necessary building permit. He mentioned that efforts to obtain the permit from the builders had been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, DOIII Ebenezer Yenzu, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, confirmed that the deceased had been handed over to the police, who are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the building collapse. Yenzu also urged residents to stay away from the site due to concerns about its structural integrity.

At the home of Kwesi Yobo Dankwa, his family and friends mourn his untimely death. Dankwa was the only son of his parents, adding to the family’s grief.
