‘Kumawood is not dead’ – Mercy Asiedu insists
Ghanaian actress Mercy Asiedu has firmly dismissed claims that the Kumawood film industry is in decline.
In an interview with Hitz FM on October 8, 2024, she emphasized that the industry’s current challenges are primarily due to a lag in technological advancement, not a lack of talent or production capacity.
“Kumawood is not dead. Actors and actresses are still available; producers are still available; it’s just that technology has changed,” Asiedu stated. She pointed out that while the talent pool remains robust, the industry has struggled to adapt to the shift from physical CD sales to digital platforms.
“At first, producers could release movies every Monday and get their money back within the week. But now, nobody is buying CDs anymore,” she explained. This shift has disrupted the traditional revenue model, making it harder for producers to recoup their investments quickly.
Mercy Asiedu attributed the industry’s struggles to a slow adaptation to new technologies by industry players. “Those responsible for the movie industry in the country weren’t quick enough to adapt to changing technology, which is why we are where we are,” she noted.
Despite these challenges, Asiedu remains optimistic about the future of Kumawood. She believes that with the right technological updates, the industry can thrive once again. “The Kumawood industry is not dead; we just need to update our technology,” she concluded.
