Asamoah Gyan reacts to Nico Williams referring to him as ‘the best striker’
Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has warmly responded to Nico Williams’ revelation that Gyan was one of his football idols growing up. In a 2022 interview, Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams expressed his admiration for Gyan, saying he had been watching the striker since he was six years old and even tried to emulate his style of play.
“When I was six years old, I loved Asamoah Gyan. He is the best striker I have seen. He scored a lot of goals,” the now 22-year-old told 3Sports. “I watched a lot of his matches and tried to incorporate his style into my football. I practiced to be like him and tried to score goals like him.”
Following Nico’s impressive performance in Spain’s victorious 2024 European Championship run, where he scored in the final against England, a video of his previous interview has resurfaced. Asamaoh Gyan, noticing the interview, shared it on his Instagram page, adding silence and prayer emojis to his post.
Nico’s older brother, Inaki Williams, who plays for Ghana, commented on Asamoah Gyan’s post, affirming, “The best.”
While Nico is currently on vacation after the Euros triumph, Inaki has returned to Athletic Bilbao for pre-season training after recovering from an injury. The 30-year-old was previously sidelined and missed Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in June. His injury, which involved a glass piece in his foot, required surgery and a period of recovery. During his recuperation, Inaki married his girlfriend Patricia Morales in a beautiful ceremony at the Basilica of Begoña in June.
