8 Killed In Bawku Conflict As Armed Men Block Bolgatanga – Tamale Highway
In a tragic escalation of the Bawku chieftaincy conflict, eight travellers were killed when gunmen blocked the Bolgatanga–Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, and opened fire.
The violent incident occurred on Sunday, October 27, 2024, raising significant security concerns in the region.
Details of the Attack
The armed men set up roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify potential targets. Passengers caught in the blockade faced interrogation over their identities.
In the deadly confrontation, approximately eight people were killed, and two vehicles were set ablaze.
A survivor recounted the terrifying ordeal: “I was travelling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for more than an hour, yet security did not respond”.
Link to Bawku Conflict
The attack is believed to be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict, which has flared up again after a period of relative peace. The resurgence of violence has heightened fears and insecurity among residents and travellers in the area.
Increased Security Measures
In response to the attack, the Ghana Police Service has assured travellers of increased security presence along the highway in the coming days.
The police, along with military forces, are working to bring the security situation in Bawku and its surrounding areas under control.
A joint Police and Military deployment has been established along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic.
“The security agencies would like to once again assure the public that we are committed to maintaining peace, security, law and order in Bawku and its environs.”
The recent ambush on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region. As the Bawku conflict continues to escalate, authorities must take swift action to protect innocent civilians and restore peace.
