Kasoa: Five dead, 30 hospitalised from cholera outbreak

A severe cholera outbreak has struck the town of Kasoa, resulting in the deaths of 5 individuals and hospitalising 30 others.

The affected are currently receiving treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital. This alarming situation has prompted urgent calls for preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Rising Death Toll

The outbreak, which began on Thursday, October 31, claimed its first three victims on the same day. By Friday afternoon, two more lives were lost, raising the death toll to five.

Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive, Anita Love Obo Amissah, confirmed these figures and expressed deep concern over the rapid spread of the disease.

Preventive Measures and Community Response

In response to the outbreak, local authorities are urging residents to maintain strict hygiene practices. Madam Obo Amissah emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal and food hygiene as critical measures to prevent further cases. “What I want to ask from the people of Kasoa is to take good care of themselves by eating healthy food,” she stated.

The MCE also highlighted the need for a collective effort from neighbouring communities, including Awutu Senya West and Gomoa East Districts, which have referred some cholera cases to Kasoa health facilities. She called for a unified approach to manage and contain the outbreak effectively.

Health authorities have been commended for their prompt response to the crisis. The Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital have mobilised additional staff, including those on leave, to handle the influx of patients.
